Greenland Overview

Greenland is known to be the largest island in the world, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. The island is well-known for its immense glaciers and vast tundra. Even though the island remains part of Denmark's kingdom, the home-rule government of the island is responsible for most of its domestic affairs. Nuuk (GodthΓ₯b) is known as the capital of Greenland.

Economy of Greenland

For a long time, Greenland's economy has been based on fishing, while seal hunting is also one of the economy's mainstays.

  • In the late 20th century, Greenland tried to expand its economy by putting much emphasis on the tourism industry.
  • However, at present, revenue from the tourism industry has grown significantly.
  • The government of Greenland also receives aid from Denmark. However, other common sectors on which the economy of Greenland is based include public service, exports, mining, and oil drilling.

People and cultural life in Greenland

The people in Greenland are Inuit mostly. Nearly 9/10th of the people in Greenland are Inuit, or Eskimo, principally. They are admixed strongly with the early strains of the European immigrant. While above one-tenth of the people here are Danish, and most of them are Denmark-born. Danish and Greenlandic are the two most commonly spoken as well as official languages here. Even though the presence of Danish, as well as access to the international mass media in Greenland, has exerted western influence in the country, still people practice the traditional Inuit cultural activities here. Activities such as folk arts, sailing, and kayak building are still popular here.
