Postal codes in Uruguay consist of 5-digit numeric codes. First, two digits of this 5-digit numeric code represent a department; internal administrative divisions of Uruguay. At the same time, "1" as a first digit represents Montevideo, the country's capital. The zones so determined are known as Zonas Postales. However, the remaining code digits are either zeros for the department's capital or overall Montevideo city. For other cities in the department, specific values are allocated.
