Estonia Overview

Estonia, also the Republic of Estonia (officially), is a Northern European country. Estonia's territory is inhabited since 9,000 BC, at least. After consecutive rule for centuries by the Germans, Danes, Swedes, Russians, and Poles, the distinct national identity of Estonia started to emerge in the late 19th and early 20th century. It resulted in the independence from Russia in the year 1920 after a short war of independence followed by World War I.

With a population of 1.3 million only, Estonia is also the least populated European Union country. Geography and climate of Estonia

Estonia is lying on the Baltic Sea's eastern shore. It contains more than 1400 lakes. Even though most of these are very small, the largest one is Lake Peipus. Similarly, the country contains multiple rivers, with Võhandu, Pärnu, and Põltsamaa being the longest. The country also contains multiple fens and bogs. Forest land of Estonia is covering almost 50% of the country. Birch, spruce, and pine are the most common species. Estonia's climate varies between temperate, continental, and maritime climate. The country has four seasons of almost equal length. The average rainfall in Estonia is 662 mm, while the average temperature here is 43.5 °F.
