Where is Ethiopia?

Ethiopia is a country in East Africa. The country's capital is Addis Abada, and the country's official currency is Ethiopian Birr.

History of Ethiopia
Ethiopia is a pre-historic country and is one of the countries with great historical importance. The Hamitic people first inhabited the country. However, in the 7th and 8th century when agriculture became quite popular in the region, Arabs and other traders also came to Ethiopia. And as the population grew, numerous languages were introduced in the country, including Semitic, Cushitic, and more.

  • Moreover, in 341 A.D, Christianity was introduced as the official religion of the country. However, in the 5th century, Islam got spread widely and was a major religion.
  • In 1896, when Italy tried to invade Ethiopia, king Menelik II annihilated the forces and established Ethiopia. In 1917, when Menelik II died, his daughter claimed the throne until she died in 1930.

After her death, her cousin has crowned the emperor of Ethiopia.

  • It was the time when the country flourished the most. During this time, slavery was banned, and trading expanded. There were 70 languages in the region that were being spoken.
  • In 1931, he constituted a reform according to which a senate was to be appointed with numerous deputies. But the final authority always remained with the king.

In 1935, Italy attacked, and in 1936 the king fled was exiled. However, in 1941, British troops fought the Italians, and the king returned to the country. In 1952, Eritrea was combined with Ethiopia.

An insight about the Land
Ethiopia shares its northern part with Eritrea, Djibouti in the northeastern, Somalia in the east, and Kenya to the south. The land of the country is overall rough and consists of rocks, highlands, and cliffs. The size of the land is approximately 1,127,127 square km. The highest geographical point of the country is Ras Dashen, a mountain in Ethiopia and has an elevation of about 4,550m. The lowest geographical feature of the region is Kobar Sink, which sits 120m below sea level. There are a total of 9 rivers and 19 lakes in Ethiopia. Some of the most famous ones include the Blue Nile, Tekeze River, Atbarah River, and Awash River.

Climate
Ethiopia enjoys different seasons at different times of the year. For example, from June-August, the temperatures are relatively high, going up to 39 °C – 40 °C. From September-November, the temperature is 35°C on days and about 12°C at night. Winter starts in December and ends in February. Even in winters, the temperature can go up to 31°C on days. Rainfall occurs mostly in June, July, and August.

Demographics
The total population of Ethiopia is approximately 112.1 million, according to the 2019 census. There are over 100 languages spoken in Ethiopia, out of which the most prominent ones are Cushitic, Semitic, and Omotic. Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic country. The people of Oromo inhabit around 36% of the land and 27% by the people of Amhara. Somali and Tigray people also occupy the land, but not that much.

Although many religions are practiced in Ethiopia, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism are the most popular religions of Ethiopia. However, the main religion is Christianity. Most of the economy of the country depends on agriculture and export. Some of the major export items are coffee, animal skins, and hides.
