Insights to French postal codes:

When it comes to French postal codes, then this postal code system comes up with an amazing history. Let’s dive deep into the past and present of French postal code system to know more about this in the best possible way.

The first introduction of French postal codes system

In France, the postal codes were introduced in the year 1964 for the very first time. This was the time when automated sorting was introduced by La Poste. However, the French postal codes were updated in 1973 to a system of 5-digit, that is still being used in the country.

Some facts about French postal code system

Here we have some facts about French postal codes which might most of the people around don’t know before: • The present postal code system that is being used in France is consisting of numbers solely. There are no letters, hyphens, spaces, or any other character is present here unlike the Zip code system of the United States. • Currently, there exist more than 30,000 postal codes in France that are officially recognized. • La Poste isn’t utilizing the Zip+4 system for codes.

Composition of postal codes

The French postal codes’ composition is based on departments that are actually administrative subdivisions just like a US country. The first two postal code numbers are of the department that can let you find a destination city. Originally, the department numbers were assigned alphabetically in the 1800s. While, later there have been few changes in the list over the time, so the organization didn’t remain as strict as it once was. However, the remaining 3 digits indicated the job of the post office.

  • Most of the post codes are ending with 0 with few exceptions which are including some of the larger cities, post office boxes and overseas territories to name a few.
  • Some of the postcodes encompass different villages because all of them are being served by the same post office.
  • If some of the villages are from different departments then the first two digits of them will not match with the rest.
  • This is similar to how the US zip code system works. CEDEX is another best example from the strict system that is known as special business mail. This term can be applied on different nonstandard mail categories which indicates recipients indicating large post and post office boxes numbers. For all of these matters, individual postcode is given, which is similar to various other countries’ systems, where a specific building, business or organization can acquire its own post code assigned.
