Australia Overview

Australia is the country that is one of the largest countries of the Australian continent and also the sixth largest country in the world.

History of Australia

When this was first an uninhabited land, and the Dutch came here, they named it the New Holland. Great Britain claimed the eastern half of this land and started New South Wales in 1788. The population of this part of land kept growing, and several changes occurred. Finally, this place was formed as the Commonwealth of Australia on the first of January 901. Since that time, it has been maintained under the democratic political system of Australia.

Geography and demographics

Being the sixth largest country in the world, Australia covers 7617930 square kilometers of land. It has a population of about 26 million, and the colonization starter here in the 17th century when the Dutch arrived here.

Demographics of Australia

It is one of the most lightly populated countries globally, with a population density of only 3.4 people for every square kilometer. Australia is highly urbanized, with more than two-thirds of the population living in the bigger cities. The population is heavily concentrated on the east coast.

Linguistics

There are no official languages spoken in Australia. However, English is the de facto national language here. This English is a little bit different from American and European English. About 73% of the total population speaks English, and there are several other languages spoken here. Arabic and Mandarin being the 2 largest with a percentage of 1.4% and 2.5% respectively.
