US Counties – Things you need to know

The United States is one of the most popular and thriving countries in the entire world. It has one of the most complex systems of government and has separate names for almost everything. Something as simple as a county is separate in the United States. Here is everything you need to know about counties in the country:

What is a county in the US?

If you were to break down a state in the United States into little administrative units, you would get a county. Think of it like a big administration block that can sometimes even govern complete cities. A very good example is that Delaware has three counties while Texas has a whopping 254 counties. The word county is of Latin origins, something that roughly translates to “Jurisdiction of a count”.

What does a county do?

The responsibility of a county varies from state to state, though most of the power is the administrative department within the area it is assigned. For example, Alaska has both organized and unorganized counties – though they are known as districts in that region. Unorganized counties have no real power and are only statistical divisions, while organized counties can contain multiple townships.

Little facts about county:

Here are some facts about county that you should know about:

  • Only Alaska and Louisiana are the two states without a real county. Alaska uses the term “districts” while Louisiana uses terms like “parishes”.
  • All counties have a local administration that is headed by a center that is known as the county seat.
  • Almost all of the United States is covered by counties. Alaska is the only exception as half of Alaska is directly controlled by the central administration.
  • The power and size of a county is not fixed, and changes between regions of the United States.

Difference between City and County:

There are a lot of differences between a city and a county. We have compiled a little list of a few differences that you should know about:

  • Services in a city are only limited to a city, but services in a county can extend to multiple cities depending on the region.
  • A city is defined as a large population with some historical establishment and a legal system while a county is a geographical area that is divided for political purposes.
  • A city’s size is usually pre-determined and does not fluctuate. Counties vary in size and can even separate a state into areas like a province.
  • Cities have a unique court system, law enforcement, fire department and even medical care centers. Counties can house these same facilities, though these facilities are for the city, and not the county itself.
  • On average, a county is larger than one city of the United States, though this is not always true.
  • The county itself can’t have a population, but it can have certain locations like cities and even smaller districts.
